Initiated by Bella Griffith-Smith, founder and artistic director of the Coral Gables Chamber Symphony and Opera Company, a 501c3 organization dedicated to encouraging young musicians to learn and perform classical music selections, American Ideal is a free concert performed before an audience of elementary school children and interested adults. It is recorded and presented by WLRN Channel 17 (PBS) during the summer.

Gabrielle is currently attending the prestigeous Colburn Academy in Los Angeles, California. This clip was uploaded on 15 March 2012, highlighting a day in the life of a student. In this case, it’s Gabrielle Chou.

In 2007, Gabrielle participated in the 3rd edition of the American Ideal produced by Bella Griffith-Smith and her Coral Gables Chamber Symphony and Opera company, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping talented young musicians perform for new, and larger audiences. The performance was broadcast on WLRN channel 17 in the South Florida area.

Opera and Classical Music

Bella Griffith-Smith was a classically-trained soprano who performed on an international stage. When she retired, she saw few opportunities for young people to use their musical and vocal talent in opera and classical music, so she decided to do something about. In 1975, the Coral Gables Chamber Symphony and Opera company gave it’s first performance. Since then, she has produced a wide variety of programs, each providing an opportunity for those with talent to “win scholarships” or advance their careers as opera singers.

The objective was, and continues to be, to provide an opportunity for young people to gain experience by performing with adults who wish to expand their “professional career.”
